The Quantum Dichotomy of Post-Dadaist Algorithms: AI Homage to Max Ernst
In this courageously unnecessary homage to Max Ernst, the artist has partnered with Artificial Intelligence to outsource the unconscious to a system that has none. Together, they push the boundaries of authorship and originality, with the irony dial turned up until it breaks off in your hand.
In true post-ironic fashion, AI Homage to Max Ernst does not simply reference Ernst; it misunderstands him, and proceeds as if this were intentional.
Dada was about bending reality, and nothing bends reality quite like an AI desperately trying to understand human art by remixing everything it found on Shutterstock.
Perhaps the work is less about what’s on the canvas (or screen) than about the faint afterimage it leaves behind. Tattered figures appear, argue among themselves, ceremonially rearrange the furniture, then put it back incorrectly. Meaning arrives late, takes a seat, and is politely ignored. The collage remains, unchanged, as if none of this were its concern.
