I had a difficult relationship with my mother. After she died, and after I had gotten past the animosity I felt toward her, I had a mental picture that
I was standing in front of her, free of her negative energy for the first time in my life. Frightened by my new-found independence, she began
running from me, trying to escape through those double doors -- to where, I don't know.
Bram Stoker Award-winning author Christopher Conlon's short story "Beyond the Gate" was inspired by this painting. You can read it
